Oh poor Giles, I think we both know this journey won't lead to no good results... We both know what's waiting for you and what you'll have to face in the end.

A spread illustration from my epic graduation project "Farmer Giles of Ham". Download recommended unless your screen is really wide.

This is very whimsical work.

I especially like the highly stylized hills, although I'[m not entirely certain that I like the way they seem "washed out" because they lack the strong outline of the main characters, but I suppose that does help focus attention on the characters themselves.

I'm very appreciative of the fact that you took the time to actually include all the fine line work on the dragon- it definitely gives it a texture and character which a flat coloring wouldn't provide, but I'm not sure that I'm a big fan of the placement since the strong outline which you've given it, or maybe the positioning of the legs (or both?), makes it look laid over the background rather than a part of it like the hapless farmer Giles.

All in all this is a really great piece.

This drawing is fantastic! Honestly I can't find anything bad about this piece of work save the one bunny on the hill. To me personally it looks like it's just floating there.

The coloring on this is absolutely astoundinf better than anything I could ever do in my life. You should defiantly continue drawing pieces of art like this one.

The castle and the house in the back are very interesting. But I was expecting the house to have fuller more...what's the word...happy and friendly and the castle have more dead or leafless branches to create a creepy more powerful feel to it.

A good and interesting composition, my only criticism would be that the dragon might be slightly larger and brought closer to the canter so that it is no longer contained by the shape of the hill but extends it. I notice that when I read it my vision almost drops out of the picture when I get to the centre so I have to make an effort to drag it up and over to the dragon. This might be due to the strong curve of the hills. I think it is an interesting effect and an original way of guiding the vision, quite exciting, but I would try and soften the effect somewhat by  bringing the dragon forward or maybe bringing out the colour of the bridge a little.  Otherwise really solid work. I like the swirly texture of the hills and the way they connect the two sides of the image. Also the rabbit in the bush is very sweet and well contrasted.

If I remember correctly this was supposed to be a spread in the book so the centre is intentionally lighter than the sides (since the middle of the spread might get warped in a physical book and you don't want to put too many important details there). But there's no way you could have known that so thanks for the input (and kind words, as usual)! :)

I've had this sitting in my messages since you submitted it! I kept waiting for a free moment to get over here and tell you how fun and gorgeous it is. I was happy to see you commenting in Fiona's journal about it!

I know the word "whimsy" has already been used, but it's really such a perfect descriptive word for this! I love your composition and the colors are so perfectly soft and storybooky. Your work lends so well to Tolkien stories. Love love love this piece!

Aw, thank you!

I always leave stuff in my messages to return to it and comment on it but I didn't know anyone else does it too, let alone to comment on my work! Oh my! :) And again, thanks a ton, I'm glad you think it's whimsical, storybook-ish and Tolkien-ish. Exactly what I tried to do.

This is so very cute! Nice use of lines/hatching and great balance of colors. I love the whimsy/irreverence of it all, and the knight's expression just cracks me up. Really great work :)

Thank you! :) I wanted to create some mix of... uh... medieval-ish and modern? Didn't want to go for entirely medieval look because it'd be too obvious for this book, but medieval stuff is so inspiring I couldn't just pass it by!

Oh yeah, allusions are great :D The contrast of the way you draw characters (very fun and modern and cartoony), and the cool little nods to the past works really well :la:

Левая сторона работы улыбает - и поза фермера Джайлза, и птицы, и собака и зайцы, и лошадь смешная! Ну а дракон - само драконье обаяние! Харёшенький! (от слова "харя", но в харёшем смысле) :aww:

Сейчас еще раз глянула на Джайлза и поняла, кого мне напоминает его поза! Смотрела диснеевскую короткометражку The Legend of Sleepy Hollow? :eager:

:woohoo:

I adore your work with colors. Everything looks so lovely! You have so much patience for all the wonderful textures on the hills.

If Giles was in one of my riding lessons, though, I'd be giving him hell about his hands. We call that "puppy paws" and correct it mercilessly :D

Haha, I'm glad you noticed it about Giles - I wanted to make the pose awkward and nervous and this was my best guess (I'm no expert at riding). By the way, if you see mistakes about the horse's anatomy or movements, feel free to critique - I know people who are constantly around animals notice these mistakes easier (I'm the same when it comes to rats or dogs).

I love how fun and engaging this picture it is, the designs of the ground really moves my eyes around the picture and I like that flow. The use of softer colours looks great. The expressive quality you give all the characters in your work is really great. I like getting the feeling of personality for everything from Giles and the dragon to the horse and the dog just by looking at the picture. Well I am just babbling on here, but I really like this picture, keep up the splendid work!!
